Types of fish in the Maasplassen

Whether you're drawn to the calm of early morning casting or the excitement of reeling in a big catch, our expansive water network is rich with perch, pike, zander, carp, and more. The diverse aquatic habitats surrounding the park provide excellent opportunities for both coarse and predatory fishing, right from your waterfront accommodation and your private jetty.

The Maasplassen is the largest interconnected water sports area in the Netherlands, making it a popular destination for anglers due to its diverse fish population.

Waters teeming with opportunity

Here's a list of the most common types of fish that can be caught in the Maasplassen lakes and waterways.

Predatory fish

These species are especially popular among sport anglers: Zander (Snoekbaars), Pike (Snoek), Perch (Baars)

Coarse & white fish

Great for beginners and experienced anglers alike: Roach (Voorn), Bream (Braak), Rudd (Rietvoorn), Tench (Zeelt), Bleak (Blankvoorn), Ide (Windes)

Carp species

Popular for longer fishing sessions and night fishing: Common Carp (Schubkarper), Mirror Carp (Spiegelkarper), Grass Carp (Graskarper)

Other species you might encounter

Eel (Paling), Catfish (Meerval), Barbel (Barbeel)

Many of these species thrive due to the Maasplassen’s combination of still and flowing water, depth variation, and natural underwater vegetation.

Note: A valid VISpas (Dutch fishing permit) is required, and local rules (such as catch-and-release for certain species) may apply.

Everything you need to know about the VISpas (Dutch fishing permit)

The VISpas is a national sport fishing license issued by Sportvisserij Nederland, the official Dutch angling federation. It gives you legal permission to fish in most public inland waters, covering thousands of locations throughout the Netherlands.

Why you need it

It’s mandatory for anyone aged 14 and older who wants to fish in public waters with two rods and authorized bait (e.g. worms, lures, boilies). The Maasplassen and waterways around Parc Maasresidence Thorn are included in the areas where the VISpas is required.

Without it, you may be fined by water authorities or environmental enforcers.

Where you can fish with it

Grants access to over 90% of Dutch fishing waters (listed in the “Gezamenlijke Lijst van Nederlandse Viswateren”).

Includes lakes, canals, rivers, and waters managed by local angling associations — such as those surrounding Parc Maasresidence Thorn.

How to get a VISpas

You have two main options:

1. Buy it online

Visit www.vispas.nl

- Choose your preferred local angling association

- Instantly receive a temporary digital VISpas (valid immediately)

- Physical card is sent to your home address within a few days

2. Buy it locally

Many fishing shops and tourist offices sell the VISpas. The cost is around €35–€45 per year for adults, while youth VISpas available for reduced rates (usually €10–€15). Prices vary slightly depending on the fishing club/region

These are valid for one calendar year and you need a new VISpas each year, but renewals are easy. You can also use the VISplanner mobile app or website to check where you can fish legally with your permit. It includes maps, regulations, and species info.

Important rules

- Catch & release may apply in certain areas or for certain species

- Night fishing or use of a third rod may require extra permits

- Always carry your VISpas and ID while fishing

- Kids under 14 can fish without a VISpas, as long as they are accompanied by a licensed adult and follow the same rules
